• Basics of the Alaska Law

Alaska passed a law to legalize medical cannabis in 1998 through a ballot measure that received 58% of the state’s vote. The law allows qualifying patients to possess 1 ounce of marijuana and to grow up to 6 plants, only 3 of which can be mature. Alaska residents who wish to obtain cannabis for medical use must complete an Application for Medical Marijuana Registry” and “Physician Statement” attesting that the patient suffers from a qualifying medical condition.

  • Fees

Alaska residents applying for a therapeutic marijuana card must pay a $25 application fee. The annual renewal fee is $20. Minors submitting applications for therapeutic cannabis must provide an original statement in writing from their parent or legal guardian stating consent to serve as the minor’s primary caregiver and gives permission for the minor to engage in the medical use of cannabis.

Alaska residents who wish to obtain cannabis for medical use must complete an “Application for Medical Marijuana Registry” and “Physician Statement” attesting that the patient suffers from a qualifying medical condition.

  • Caregivers

Any patient who needs assistance with obtaining, cultivating, or administering cannabis can designate a primary and alternate caregiver. This is done by completing the “Primary Caregiver Application for Medical Marijuana Registry” and the “Alternate Caregiver Application for Medical Marijuana Registry”. You are not allowed to use marijuana medical ID cards from other states to obtain Alaskan cannabis.

  • Qualifying Medical Conditions

In-order-to qualify as a cannabis patient in the state of Alaska a resident must suffer from one or more qualifying medical conditions. These conditions include cancer, glaucoma, HIV or AIDS, cachexia or severe weight loss, severe pain, severe nausea, seizures, persistent muscle spasms, and other conditions that are subject to approval by the Alaska Department of Health.
