There been a clear resurgence in interest in cannabis, more commonly called marijuana, as medicine. The federal government made cannabis use illegal in 1970 with passage of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act

Medical marijuana, or cannabis, was made illegal by the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. This act classified marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug indicating that it was highly addictive and had no medicinal value.

You may have guessed that marijuana, or cannabis, is the most commonly used illegal drug in America. Surprisingly cannabis has been used medically for over 5000 years and physicians in the United States were prescribing cannabis in 1850 for the treatment of ailments such as nerve pain, alcoholism, opiate addiction, and seizures.
